Matra built the engine.

Hand-assembled in Vélizy. Lucas mechanical injection. Hewland FG400 bolted direct.

Dry sump. Five stages. Titanium rods. Magnesium casings. Every bolt safety-wired.

The only French V12 to win Le Mans. Three times.

While the 3.0-liter Matra V12 F1 (1971) engine was built specifically for F1 racing, its development process utilized the specialized testing cells of Matra’s aviation laboratories. 

The internal metallurgy—the lightweight magnesium casings and high-RPM internal balancing tolerances—was subject to the exact same quality control protocols as aircraft turbine blades.

This military-grade testing regimen is precisely why the MS670B could sing at an ear-splitting 10,500 RPM for 24 straight hours without throwing a rod.

The F1 engine was tuned to scream at an eye-watering 11,000 RPM, producing around 440 horsepower. It gained a reputation for being the loud, visceral spine-tingling sound on the F1 grid.

For a mutation to survive 24 hours of non-stop wide-open throttle, they needed to prioritize endurance over absolute maximum RPM. So, they modified the internal valve layout and dialed the redline back to 10,500 RPM.

The result was endurance-spec mutation of the MS71 architecture that was designated the MS72 (and later the MS73). This is the exact iteration bolted inside the 1973 Matra-Simca MS670B that conquered Le Mans.
